By the current state of the art and today's research, there are very few or no clinical observations of thermal damage to the retina caused by LED radiation (see German BfS Workshop, November 2018). In the latest report, the retinal thermal hazard (RTH) of LEDs was rated as non-critical (see Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks – SCHEER, “Opinion on potential risks to human health of Light Emitting Diodes”, June 2018), and also current standards, e.g. IEC/TR 62778, do not take RTH into consideration, only the blue light hazard (BLH).
